Safeguarding Policy

1. Introduction

K.A.W Academy of Boxing & Kickboxing LTD (“the Academy”) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children, young people, and vulnerable adults involved in our programs.
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, members, and contractors associated with the Academy.

The Academy recognises its duty under the Children Act 1989/2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children (UK Government guidance), and other relevant UK legislation to protect children and vulnerable individuals from harm.


2. Purpose

This policy aims to:

  • Ensure that everyone involved with the Academy understands their responsibilities in safeguarding.
     
  • Provide a clear framework for recognising, reporting, and responding to concerns about abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
     
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
     

3. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Children and young people under 18 years.
     
  • Vulnerable adults (individuals over 18 who may be at risk due to disability, mental health, or other circumstances).
     
  • All staff, coaches, volunteers, and external contractors involved in Academy activities.
     

4. Definitions

4.1 Abuse

Abuse can take many forms, including but not limited to:

  • Physical abuse: causing harm through hitting, shaking, or other forms of physical violence.
     
  • Emotional abuse: persistent negative treatment affecting self-esteem or emotional development.
     
  • Sexual abuse: any sexual activity imposed on a child or vulnerable adult.
     
  • Neglect: failure to provide basic needs or care, leading to harm.
     
  • Bullying/harassment: repeated mistreatment or intimidation, including online.
     

5. Safeguarding Principles

  • The welfare of the child or vulnerable adult is paramount.
     
  • All concerns will be taken seriously and acted upon promptly.
     
  • Staff and volunteers will maintain a safe and professional environment at all times.
     
  • Confidentiality will be maintained but will not prevent reporting of safeguarding concerns.
     

6. Roles and Responsibilities

6.1 Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO)

The Academy appoints a Designated Safeguarding Officer responsible for:

  • Receiving and managing safeguarding concerns.
     
  • Reporting concerns to relevant authorities (e.g., local safeguarding board, police, or social services).
     
  • Ensuring staff receive appropriate training.

6.2 Staff and Volunteers

  • All staff have read and understand this policy.
     
  • Staff will report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the DSO.
     
  • Staff will maintain appropriate boundaries with members at all times.
     

7. Safe Recruitment

  • All staff and volunteers undergo enhanced DBS checks where required.
     
  • References and background checks are completed for all staff.
     
  • Training in safeguarding, is provided through the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association and updated regularly.
     

8. Reporting Procedures

  1. Recognise signs of abuse, neglect, or unsafe behaviour.
     
  2. Record all relevant details (dates, times, individuals involved) in a factual manner.
     
  3. Report concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Officer.
     
  4. The DSO will escalate concerns to local safeguarding authorities, as appropriate.
     

Emergency situations: If a child or vulnerable adult is at immediate risk, contact 999 immediately.
 

9. Code of Conduct for Staff and Volunteers

  • Treat all members with respect and dignity.
     
  • Avoid physical punishment, intimidation, or discriminatory behaviour.
     
  • Do not engage in inappropriate contact or communication with children or vulnerable adults.
     
  • Only use approved Academy channels for communication with members.
     

10. Training and Awareness

  • All staff and volunteers must complete safeguarding training upon induction.
     
  • Refresher training is provided at least every 2 years.
     
  • Members and parents are informed of the Academy’s safeguarding procedures.
     

11. Confidentiality

  • Information is shared on a need-to-know basis to protect individuals.
     
  • Personal data is handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy and UK GDPR regulations.
     

12. Policy Review

  • This policy is reviewed annually or sooner if legislation changes.
     
  • Feedback from staff, members, or authorities may be incorporated to improve safeguarding practices.
